What is The Popinjay Cavalier about?
The play is set in 1830s Europe and has been described by its producers as a rambunctious comedy of deception and disguise, inspired by the swashbuckling epics of stage and screen and celebrating theatre and its heightened romance.
The title
A popinjay is a vain, foppish or conceited person; a cavalier is a horseman or a courtly gentleman. Sacha Baron Cohen plays the title role.
What we don't know yet
Plot details beyond the setting and genre have not been released. Tarantino has said only that he wants to give the West End a great night out. We will update this page as more is announced.
Tarantino's road to the stage
From film to theatre
Quentin Tarantino is best known as the writer and director of films including Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, the Kill Bill films and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. He has acted on Broadway before, in a 1998 revival of Wait Until Dark, but The Popinjay Cavalier is his first play as a writer and director.
The announcement
The project was first announced in March 2026 as a swashbuckling comedy heading for the West End in early 2027. In October 2026, the producers confirmed the Phoenix Theatre, the dates and Sacha Baron Cohen in the title role. The production draws on the classic Hollywood swashbuckler tradition, including the writing of George Bruce, Ernst Vajda and Jesse Lasky Jr.
The producers
The play is presented by Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sonia Friedman Productions.
