Our Take: Legally Blonde at the London Coliseum

LTH Anticipation Rating

Why it's worth booking

Legally Blonde has been one of the most loved musical comedies of the last twenty years, but London has had to wait a long time for a proper West End return. Its original run at the Savoy Theatre (2009–2012) made a star of Sheridan Smith and won three Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical; since then, London audiences have only had the 2022 Regent's Park Open Air Theatre staging and touring visits.

This version comes from Curve in Leicester, whose artistic director Nikolai Foster has built a reputation for giving familiar musicals a fresh, high-energy reinvention, with Leah Hill's choreography driving the big numbers. Amber Davies leads as Elle: she has already proved herself on the Coliseum stage, winning a WhatsOnStage Award for The Great Gatsby there in 2025, and comes to London after leading the sold-out tour. Our rating is an anticipation rating; the run is only nine weeks, so it is worth booking early.

What Makes It Special

  • The first West End run since 2012. The original London production played the Savoy from 2009 to 2012 and won three Olivier Awards.
  • Amber Davies as Elle Woods. A WhatsOnStage Award winner at the Coliseum in 2025 and runner-up on Strictly Come Dancing 2025.
  • A Curve production. Directed by Nikolai Foster, with choreography by Leah Hill and musical supervision by Matt Spencer-Smith.
  • Big, hummable score. Music and lyrics by Laurence O'Keefe and Nell Benjamin, book by Heather Hach, from Amanda Brown's novel and the 2001 film.
  • Fresh from a sold-out tour. The production comes to London after a UK and Ireland tour that ends at Theatre Royal Brighton on 2 January 2027.

  • Want a feel-good, funny musical with big dance numbers
  • Are planning a group night out or a celebration

It might not be for you if you...

  • Prefer serious drama or darker musicals

  • Dislike pink, sparkle and broad comedy
  • Find large venues less intimate — the Coliseum is the West End's biggest

Best for

Less suited to audiences looking for a serious or intimate night at the theatre.

Everything You Need to Know

What happens in Legally Blonde?

Elle Woods seems to have it all: she is president of her sorority, adored by her friends and expecting a proposal from her boyfriend, Warner. Instead, he dumps her — he is heading to Harvard Law School and wants someone more "serious".

Elle goes to Harvard

Determined to win him back, Elle studies her way into Harvard Law herself. Her new classmates and professors write her off at first sight, but with the help of teaching assistant Emmett and her new friend Paulette, she starts to realise that she has far more to offer than anyone assumed — including herself.

A story about self-belief

Under all the pink and the comedy, it is a story about refusing to be underestimated, and it ends with Elle taking centre stage in a high-profile courtroom case. The musical is based on Amanda Brown's novel and the 2001 film starring Reese Witherspoon.
